Welcome one, welcome all, to the unofficially official UK Archers site! This site is co-managed by me and a friend - though I’ve done almost all the work and paid all the bills, so if you must worship one of us make it me.
Anyway, I/We came up with this idea when I saw a user on the Arch forums offering free archlinux.us email addresses to anyone who asked. I mentioned this to my friend, and decided to check if archlinux.co.uk was taken (just on a whim). It wasn’t, so I registered it. I then wanted to find a host that could also provide a Jabber server, and a small amount of googling found that DreamHost was what I was looking for. The prices on DreamHost are pretty good, but the set up fee was £25~, so I went back to googling for a coupon code. I found one that took £25 off, so I got (effectively) free setup, and an extra 2.5p off my first bill payment!
I then had to think about what to put on the site… I decided on using Wordpress as the content management system, phpBB as the forum, and Google for the email. I’m just getting to the final stages of setting those up (as of the time of writing). Anyone will be able to use any of the services, though I may restrict the Jabber accounts to those that have an email account here, then again I may not.
Anyway, enough of that history lesson. I hope you enjoy the site, whatever you use it for, and I shall enjoy maintaining it!
